Responding on populism Donald Trump, Obama continued "rant"

HBS.News - President Obama went off on his own rant Wednesday at a trilateral press conference in which he disputed the idea that Donald Trump is a populist and that the presumptive GOP nominee instead promotes "nativism" or "xenophobia."

After reporters asked a series of questions of Mr. Obama, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Mr. Obama decided he had something else to say in Ottawa -- he addressed the common theme of populism raised during the event.

"I'm not prepared to concede the notion that some of the rhetoric that's been popping up is populist," Mr. Obama said, referring to Trump.

He said the reason why he ran for president in 2008, again in 2012, and why he will continue to work in some capacity in public service after he leaves office next year is because he cares about people and making sure every child has the same opportunities as he had.

The president said he cares about poor people, about workers having a collective voice in the workplace, about kids getting an education and ensuring that the U.S. has a fair tax system.

"I suppose that makes me a populist," Mr. Obama said.

Without identifying him by name, Mr. Obama dismissed Trump as someone "who has never shown any regard for workers, who has never fought on behalf of any social justice issues" and who has worked against providing economic opportunities.

"They don't suddenly become a populist because they say something controversial in order to win votes," he said. "That's not the measure of populism; that's nativism or xenophobia...or it's just cynicism."

"Somebody who labels us versus them or engages in rhetoric about how we're going to look after ourselves and take it to the other guy..that's not the definition of populism," he added.

Obama acknowledged that he went off on a "rant" and that he has that freedom now since he's nearing the end of his two terms in office.

During the press conference, Mr. Obama also addressed Trump's comments Tuesday in which he talked about withdrawing from trade deals like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) or the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

"The prescription of withdrawing from trade deals and focusing solely on your local market, that's the wrong medicine. It's not feasible," Mr. Obama said.

No American Brexit, The U.K.'s vote doesn't mean Donald Trump is headed for a win.

HBSNews.com - The world woke up to the reality and aftershocks of Brexit, the U.K.'s eventual exit from the European Union. The U.K.'s departure from the EU is now forthcoming because of the success of a referendum there, where voters decided by 52-48 percent to make the break. The outcome of the vote has resulted in a sharp decline in the value of the British pound, the resignation of British Prime Minister David Cameron, who campaigned for U.K. to remain in the EU, and speculation that other countries in the EU might follow the U.K.'s lead. Global markets also took a tumble.

These surprising events have also caused speculation about whether the victory of the forces pushing for Brexit in the U.K. is an indicator of what might happen in the U.S. in November's presidential election. Specifically, does the success of Brexit overseas portend the success of Donald Trump here at home? Maybe.

The comparisons between Trump and Brexit are gaining credibility because the issues that propelled Brexit to triumph in the U.K. are the same issues that have been hotly debated in the U.S. As the Washington Post noted, "On both sides of the Atlantic, political establishments and the elites have found themselves on the defensive. Rising resentment over the fallout from globalization and the effects of the financial collapse of 2008, which has widened the gap between the rich and everyone else, has divided voters in Britain and the United States. Added to that are emotional issues of national and cultural identity at a time of growing demographic diversity, highlighted in both countries by often-angry debates over immigration."

Trump's presidential run, which has been marked by strong stances against immigration, a foreign policy guided by an "America first" philosophy and fierce campaigning against the traditional political establishment, has benefitted immensely from this dynamic. The frustrations with the status quo felt by conservatives across the country are largely what propelled him to the unexpected position of Republican Party nominee. Trump himself has remarked on the similarities between the sentiments that have promoted his campaign and the referendum in the U.K. At a recent press conference in Scotland, Trump said of the Brexit vote, "I think you're going have this happen more and more. I really believe that and I think it's happening in the United States. It's happening by the fact that I've done so well in the polls."

Clinton Ally, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla Trying to deceive Sanders Likely Voters
Unless the mass media campign be launched, or conciousness otherwise lifted, hunders of thousands, if not millions, of voters for Bernie Sanders will have their judgment discarded and were never counted, because the instructations were erroneosly reported by poll workers connected, disenfranchising the possibilitin, independent voters are registered as "NO Perty Preference" (NPP)

California elections supervised and managed by the California Secretary Alex Padilla, a supporter of Hillary Clinton entiled fundraiser for Clinton in Riverside on May 21st.

Voters have beeen told to use any kind of sound, "NPP" sound than regular ballots with the name of the Democratic Party presidential candidates' printed on them. Note to California voters : If you do not or did not see Bernie Sanders' name printed on your ballot, you have the wrong kind of ballot. You have until election day to go the country's voter registrar's office to ask or a Democratic party ballot, or ask for it at your polling place on Election Day.

Last week independent journalist Greg Palast reported :

"I am currently reporting from Southem California, and there's an Ashley Beck, who is a poll worker in conservative Orange County. She was being trained with other pook workers, and they were given some very strange information. In the california primary, the independent voters registered as NPP, or no party preference, can vote in the Democratic primary. They can ask for a ballot and they are allowed to vote. The Orange Cubty poll workers were told if NPP voters ask for Democratic Party ballot to vote for Bernie of Hilarry, they are not to given regular ballots, but provisional ballots. This shook up Ashley."

Ms. Beck told Palast :

"I was told that all NPP voters are to be given provisional ballots. I was bothered by that, because I was always told that NPP voters in California can vote or Democrats and their vote would be counted. I was a little worried that he was telling all 18 of us poll workers t give all NPP voters provisionak ballots. We all know what happens most of the time with provisional ballots. They are not being counted."

"Provisional" ballots difer from regular Democratic party ballots in thet they have no presidential candidates printed on them. True Democratic pimary ballots have "Bernie Sanders" and "Hillary Clinton" printed on them.

Palast, in an interview with Dennis Bernstein for Reader Supported News, pointed out that phenomenon of record numbers of independent voters seeking to vote in this year's primaries, overwhelmingly consist of Sanders partisans. The votes thrown out will almost all be Sanders votes, Palast said.

The polling firn Political Data nc. yold NBC affiliate KCRA News in Sacramento that, according to their data, 58% of independent voters who sought to cast a Democratic ballot would have voted for Sanders, while just 37% saidthey would vote for Clinton.

A search of Callifornia media coverage of the incorrect instructions shows only the KCRA report, which suggests that going into the CA primary this Tuesday, untold numbers of votes are still headed toward casting votes that won't count.

In addition, the ballot confusion comes amid reports that, similarly to what happened in Arizona and New York,, voters are finding their party affiliations mysterious changed, sometimes disqualifying them from voting in the Democratic primary. Voters should exercise extreme vigilance in cheking their recorded voter regisrations online.

A Ca citizen's group, the Voting Rights Defence Project, filed a lawsuit last month as numerous instances of the misinformation on state websites spread, asking the judge to order the state to issue correct information via a mass media campaign before this Tuesday's primary. Federal Judge Willian Alsup threw out the suit, saying "The citizens of California are smart enough to know what their rights are."

Secretary of State Padilla's office fought the lawsuit and denied any public awareness campaign wa needed.

The approaching iasco unfolds as Hillary Clinton continues to fight for a tie in the plls with Donald Trump, while Sanders maintains a wide lead over Trump in head-to-head, general election polls. The polls suggest the independent voters who support Sanders will not will not transfer their allegiance, and votes, to Hillary, if she is nominee. Sanders maintains a comfortable 11 point lead over Trump, while Clinton is now fighting to stay neck-and-neck.

At the same time heavy blows continued to rain down the candidacy of Clinton, at least not spicy State Departement report on the removal of its thousands o email in violation of the Public Recos Act, and his use of the email account is not secure when his time as Secretary of State, the national security experts say compromised confidential nation, CIA Director and former NSA Director Michael Hayden told USA Today:

" I will lose all respect for a number of foreign intelligence agencies if they do not sit back, paging via email,"

As Trump rose in the polls in relation to Clinton, a newquestion about the Clinton Foundation continues to surface, as well as old ones, such as report from the magazine Mother Jones liberal that acceptance by Clinton a great gift from the govemment of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates submitted  the thorny question of consent arms deals to countries with Clinton when was secretary of state.

Mashrou Leila Hamed Sinno Speaking of Muslims, Arabs and gay

HBSNews.com - Hamed Sinno is the frontman o Lebanese indie rock band Mashrou Lela and an openly gay Arab American from a Muslim family. He reacted strongly to a crowd following the mass shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub, lamenting the attack againts the LGBT community as well as the rheoric againts Muslims and Arabs that followed.

In a interview with reported in Friday, Sinno slammed Republican presindential candidate Donald Trump, calling him a "fascist," an lammented anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric in 2016 politics, adding that Trump's rise is "very shocking for someone who grew up with this idea" that in the United States "everything is made right when it comes to equality."

Mashrou' Leila, whose name translate to "The Night Project," was formed at the American University of Beirut 2008 annd rose to fame across the Middle East during the Arab Spring.

Through its music, lyrics and videos the group addresses issues that are largely taboo in Arab mainstream culture ranging from sexuality, homosexuality and the politics of gender and religion, cusing them to get banned from performing in Jordan this past April.

"(In the Middle East) there's a lot of discourse thet gets remved from mainstream debate, from popular culture but also from society," Sinno said. "Becase the big network and television and magazines won't address these question -- Be it stuff about sexual liberties or queerness or gender equality or even socialism."

Amman Governor Khalid Abu Zeid told the Associated Press in April thet the group was banned because its songs "contradicted" regilious beliefs, speciically referencing the song "Djin" or "The Devil."

Amid an outpouring of support n social media rom their fans, the band was re-listed to perform, thet could not make it to Amman and the state of the ban is currently unclear, according t the band's re[resentive. The band, now composed of lead singer Sinno, haig Papazian, Carl Gerges, Firas Abu-Fakher and Ibrahim Badr, vowed not to waver on their beliefs in the face of growing political tension.

They released their fourth album "Ibn El-Leil," which trabslates to "The Son of the Night" last year and the album, written during the two years after Sinno's father passed away, is set in Beirut nightclubs and addresses grief, mourning and escapism in songs llike "3 minutes," "Maghawir" and "Asnam."

Nightlife in Beirutu is actually where so much of our politics and society get negotiated," Sinno said. "It's a  very political thing to go to a bar in Beirut."

The band is currently on their second U.S. tour and will be heading to Canada later this summer and Sinno said he was surprised by how much the band was asked to speak for Arab and Muslim culture during their travels.

"I don't think that expectation is really there when it comes to dealing with white artists. No one really goes up to a white artist and says, 'How do you represent yoour culture?' "Sinno said, criticizing the oversimplification of Arab identity.

Sinno is a second generation Arab-American and grew up in Lebanon listening to stories from his father about the opportunity and the freedom that exist in the U.S. and has thought about moving to the United States and adopting a child one day. But he was disappointed by the racism and homophobia that he experinenced during his travels.
