Messi to play for Argentina again?

HBSNews.com - FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, who retired from Argentina national team duty last month, will reportedly make a return to international football.

According to La Nacion, the 29-year-old plans to return to his country's national team in November, despite stating in June that he was done with international football.

Messi announced his decision to quit after the Albiceleste lost the 2016 Copa America final against Chile, which was his fourth major final defeat with his country, three of which he was captain for.

However, fans may see their wishes come true near the end of the year, when Argentina are scheduled to play some World Cup qualifiers.

That suggests that Messi will miss his country's matches in September and October, which may give the Catalan club star more time to feel refreshed and rejuvenated ahead of his return.

Fans have got together in the Blaugrana talisman's country of birth to beg their superstar to reverse his decision, and, as per reports, it could have worked.

What really messi will retire from the team of Argentina?

HBSNews.com - Argentina's Lionel Messi, considered by many to be the best player in the world, said he will likely retire from international soccer. The news came shortly after his side lost the Copa America final to Chile on penalties.

"This is tough and a difficult time," Messi, the Argentina team captain, said. "The first thing that comes to my mind and that I have thought is that the end has come for me and our team [Argentina]."
He referred to the four major competition finals he has played with Argentina - all of which he lost.

Visibly upset, he suggested that there was a movement of people who wanted to see him retire.

"I think this is best for everyone, firstly for me and for a lot of people that wish this," he said. "The team has ended for me, a decision made. I tried many times [to be champion with Argentina] and I leave without being able to obtain it." Asked if a decision has been made to leave team Argentina, Messi responded, "I think so. I don't know, it is how I feel and think right now. This is a huge sadness and I missed the penalty."

Messi missed that penalty kick after the two sides were held to a stalemate following extra time. Although Chile missed one of their kicks, midfielder Francisco Silva converted Chile's final penalty, sealing a 4-2 score on penalty kicks and the win -- the second year in a row Chile defeated the Argentines

Germany advanced to the Euro 2016 quarterfinals by conquering Slovakia

HBSNews.com - Germany produced its best performance yet at the European Championship to book a place in the quarterfinals with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Slovakia.

Jerome Boateng put the world champions in the lead in its round of 16-match Sunday as soon as the eighth minute when his shot from outside the area took a slight deflection into the corner of the Slovakia goal.

Mesut Ozil had the chance to make it 2-0 six minutes later after Martin Skrtel conceded a penalty for a shove on Mario Gomez, but goalkeeper Matus Kozacik guessed the right way and palmed away his spot kick.

Germany had further chances to double its lead in the first half — Thomas Mueller had a host of opportunities. Eventually its pressure paid off, and Mario Gomez scored Germany's second in the 43rd after the impressive Julian Draxler eluded Juraj Kucka to set up the simple finish.

Kucka had moments earlier come close to levelling for Slovakia only to be thwarted by a fine reflex save from Manuel Neuer.

Draxler killed off any lingering hopes of a Slovakia comeback with a 63rd-minute volley from close range.

With the game settled, Germany coach Joachim Loew introduced some players, including Lukas Podolski for his first appearance in the tournament, and rested others, such as Boateng and Drexler, ahead of the quarterfinal match against Spain or Italy in Bordeaux on Saturday.

Loew's side is the only team remaining at Euro 2016 that has yet to concede a goal. Germany hasn't conceded a goal since it lost 3-1 to Slovakia in a pre-tournament friendly in Augsburg on May 29.

Nine things to know as Wimbledon gets underway
HBSNews.com - While the whole of Britain ponders what’s next (of course you’ve heard of Brexit), the sporting world turns its attention to the country’s most famous – and reliable – event: Wimbledon.

The Championships begin Monday at SW19, where world No. 1 players Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic are defending their titles. But are they the respective favorites? That question – and more – answered below.

1. Serena chases No. 22 – again

Williams is “stuck.” The 34-year-old hasn’t won a major title since hoisting trophy No. 21 at the All England Club here last year, which put her one shy of Steffi Graf’s Open era record of 22 Grand Slams. Are milestone majors the hardest for Serena to win? Maybe. It took her a year to go from her 17th major title to 18 (tying the number of majors won by Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova). The women's favorite opens against Swiss qualifier Amra Sadikovic, the world No. 148.

2. Djokovic and the calendar Slam

Last year the pressure was heaped on the shoulders of Williams to go four-for-four in majors in a calendar year, and this year that goal is within reach for men’s top seed Djokovic. The Serbian finally got his wish in Paris, champion there three weeks ago in his fourth appearance in the final. Djokovic is the first man to own all four majors at once since Rod Laver did so in 1969, and he’ll look to equal Laver’s other achievement from that year over the next 10 weeks: The calendar Grand Slam, winning all four majors in one single season. He’s halfway there.

3. Roger makes a return

Roger Federer makes his much-awaited return to Grand Slam tennis following a rare miss at the French Open. A back injury kept him out of Roland Garros, his first major missed since the 1999 U.S. Open, which broke a streak of 65 straight Grand Slam appearances – a record. He was a semifinalist at two warm-up events in the last three weeks, and – should their seeds hold – is slated to meet Djokovic in the semifinals.

4. No Nadal

Rafael Nadal is still suffering from the effects of a wrist injury suffered at the French Open, knocking him out at Wimbledon and putting him at risk to miss the Rio Olympics in August. Should he not be able to compete at the Games, it will mark the second straight Olympics that the Spaniard has missed.

5. Sharapova appeal looming

Maria Sharapova misses her second major in a row, but first since she was handed a two-year suspension by the International Tennis Federation for testing positive for the banned substance meldonium at this year’s Australian Open. Sharapova’s legal team has submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which has said it will hand down a decision by July 18, meaning it could come during the two weeks of Wimbledon.

6. Can Muguruza follow up?

How will Garbiñe Muguruza follow up first Grand Slam title? The 22-year-old Spaniard won her maiden major at the French Open, an impressive effort in the final over Williams. But she lost her first – and only – match on grass since. Women's tennis has been no place for consistency recently as Angelique Kerber, the Australian Open champion, fell in the first round at the French Open last month.

7. Murray-Lendl rekindled

Andy Murray has brought Ivan Lendl back to his team, the former world No. 1 who helped him to two  Grand Slam titles. Murray has been runner-up to Djokovic in both Melbourne and Paris so far this year, and he’s reveled in the home hope – and pressure. Milos Raonic has brought on John McEnroe temporarily, and Stan Wawrinka has paired with 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek.

8. Venus’ Wimbledon farewell?

Is this it for Venus Williams at Wimbledon? Now 36, the American is seeded in the top eight and has a draw that is favorable at the major she loves the most – and has won five times. But it’s been eight years since Williams has won a major title, and her Sjodgren’s syndrome can crop up on any day. She’s drawn to meet Muguruza in the quarterfinal should they both make it as far. It’s hard to say if this is her final outing at SW19, though she has made the Olympics a goal.

9. Lower British pound = smaller payout

That aforementioned Brexit? It’s hitting the tennis players, too. With the British pound sinking in value, prize money payout will subsequently be lower. That £2 million the winners will earn in two weeks’ time? That’s down some 10 percent versus the U.S. dollar. Hardest hit are the players who will lose earlier, however, as the round-by-round payout increases exponentially.

Euro 2016: Swiss conquered Poland to penalties

HBSNews.com - Poland has beaten Switzerland 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out to reach the European Championship quarter-finals for the first time following a riveting last-16 clash that ended 1-1 after extra time.

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski was subdued in the first half but his team created chances thanks to livewire left winger Kamil Grosicki and equally good work by Blaszczykowski on the other flank.

Blaszczykowski broke the deadlock with a composed finish from 10 metres after a darting run by Grosicki and a clever dummy from Milik gave the winger time and space to pick his spot.

With playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri and striker Haris Seferovic totally stifled by Poland's rock-solid defence, Switzerland created little up front in the opening period despite roaring "Go Suisse" chants by their supporters.

The Swiss came out with renewed purpose in the second half and Shaqiri finally showed a glimpse of his immense talent with a dazzling solo run and a stinging shot which goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski parried. Blaszczykowski had Yann Sommer at full stretch as the pace increased with Switzerland throwing men forward..

Shaqiri produced a moment of magic with one of the best goals of the tournament in the 82nd minute, twisting his body in the air to unleash a fierce shot which gave Fabianski no chance as it went in off the post..

Galvanised by the goal, Switzerland took the upper hand and dominated the additional 30 minutes, forcing several desperate clearances by the Polish defence, which had conceded in only one other match in 2016.

Substitute Eren Derdiyok missed a sitter for the Swiss when Fabianski kept out his close-range header but a rattled Poland somehow held on to force the shoot-out.
